Meraki: John Figert

Meraki Series: Meraki is a word that is often used to describe what it means to do something with passion, with absolute devotion, and with undivided attention. When you love doing something, anything, so much that you put something of yourself into it. So, we’ve dedicated this series to those who live out that meaning, and we ask them how.

Today, we introduce you to the fearless leader behind our Gainesville, Clearwater, Tallahassee, and Jacksonville Florida locations.! Read more below to learn about how the local owner, John Figert lives out Meraki. 

How long have you been in the hospitality industry?

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 48 years! 

When did you franchise your first Taziki’s location? 

In 2016, we opened the Tallahassee location. Soon after, we opened four more stores in 14 months, throughout central Florida! 

What is something unique about your stores in Florida? 

I truly believe that we have some of the best employees in the restaurant industry. Our employees conduct themselves with a helpful spirit and have fun at work. Many of our employees are passionate about art, and we love to share their work inside of our restaurants. Some of my favorite events that our locations have are our live music events where we partner with local vendors to bring the community together. 

What inspired you about the Taziki’s brand leading to your interest in franchising?

The incredible food! I felt that our locations could have a positive impact on the brand’s growth throughout Florida. 

What is your favorite item on Taziki's menu? 

The Shrimp Kebobs! My other staples include the Quinoa Bowl with Chicken Kebobs and the Monday Special (Portobello Mushroom Sandwich) with my favorite side, the Tomato Cucumber Salad! 

If you had a piece of advice to offer someone who is interested in franchising, what would you tell them?

Strive to create a family-friendly and welcoming environment in your restaurants. 

Share one of your favorite Taziki's memories.

Our relationship with The Foundation Academy School is unlike any other.  Our Jacksonville location loves having the opportunity to partner with this incredible school to host students in the restaurant. This allows them to learn about the Mediterranean culture, and diet by trying our menu items. 

 Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that people might not know!

I have family originally from Italy, and recently visited the property where my cousins farm olive trees, vegetables, and still have a wine vineyard today. I am a proud father to my three boys who are now fathers themselves. My family has grown with three wonderful “Daughter-in-Loves” and seven extraordinary grandchildren. The most interesting of all is that I lived and traveled the country in a 41’ Diesel Pusher Motorhome for seven years!
